Default How to use AFK and DND properly?

AFK = Away From Keyboard
DND = Do Not Disturb

It seems like lately anybody sets his mode to afk, and keeps talking in chat/pm, etc ... While people talk being in afk mode, it's a matter of time before everyone ignores it. Meaning it will loose it's purpose. Not to mention it's bloody annoying to get the warning message: 'That player is afk and may not receive your message' while you are answering his/her question immediately.

The idea behind afk is that you show to anyone who pm's you, you're not behind your comp. In theory it's a great and simple concept. By being lazy and abusing it, it's better to not have the afk function.

Dnd means: leave me alone I don't wat to talk, trade, ... for whatever reason.

Now people use the afk mode instead of dnd. It's totally pointless and it sabotages the people who use it properly.

I see 2 possible solutions:

1. Start to use it only when u are away. Turn it off when you are back.
2. Jeff changes the afk function as soon as you are idle for 5 or 10 minutes. As soon as you regain applet focus again, the afk mode is turned off automagically.

As changing people's behavior is Utopia, the second mill serve the purpose of our beloved afk the best.

I support the suggestion of the Automatic AFK turn on.

When i ask people why they dont turn /AFK off they tell me.

" Because if someone PM's me and i dont feel like answering them they will just think im AFK " To that i say, if you dont want to answer them, use the other commands, like /i

I think the heart of the reason that people - or at least that I - don't return from AFK is that I simply do not remember that I set myself to AFK; the game interface doesn't indicate that you're AFK anywhere, so it's easy to simply forget. Additionally, there is a minor incentive to remain AFK at all times; in the event that I forget to log out at home and then try to log in at work to check my passive advancement, I can't if I haven't set myself AFK. It's a minor incentive to be sure, but it comes at not much personal cost. (Other than accidentally annoying people who respond to my PMs, but that's not something I can even tell I'm doing.) I think that displaying "AFK" somewhere obvious on the interface constitutes a partial solution, and simply removing the AFK status when the player does something significant (whispers or shouts, or initiates combat) constitutes another solution that I don't think most people would have a problem with. If you don't want to be bugged, that's what DND is for.

Same here. Problem is there is no notification that you are AFK or DND unless you actually turn them on/off - shared bliss after a while gets rid of that message. Also when you log off, your AFK status doens't change either.

Would be nice if next to the options/auction/storage bar it had in red/grey AFK and DND, and you could turn it on/off from there too (or add it to the options menu).

I only learned about the /afk command due to an offhand comment someone made in chat, and until just now I wasn't aware of /dnd. When I started playing, I didn't speak in chat until I was about level 10 because I had no idea how. When I finally did, my speech showed yellow and I was afraid I was yelling. So I shut up for a couple more levels.

Point being, it'd sure be nice to have a list of these commands accessible from the game interface.

actually, the game does tell you when you are AFK
say i were to pm zenga, and i was afk, when he responded...
it would say (face) (afk) says:
meaning you are set to afk.

i think a quick fix for this is to make it more annoying for the person that is afk that isnt.

right now the person not afk gets a floating message and 2 lines of crap in their chatbar every message sent.

the person afk just gets (afk). i say switch it, and also give the afk person some extra lines of crap to make them want to get out of the mode.

or another fix: instead of a / command, make it a button that blocks your screen, like a pause button in offline games, that lets others know you are gone.

I am agreed with sys. idle so to say, 5 min. sounds fair enough.
Also I tend to forget my afk status, so indication would be necessery, if sys. idle aint going to happen and so called quick buttons sound good too!

To play devil's advocate, I find keeping afk on constantly provides a fantastic means of screening those with whom you wish to speak from those you might not, without offending the latter. Call it a Nodian voicemail facility for call screening.

If you're going to bump a 2+ month old thread, at least have something useful to add to it. =/
