Heroic Essence Distribution Bug

Default Heroic Essence Distribution Bug

I'm starting to notice two very different stories emerging from characters over lvl 75 who regularly fight in heroic mode.

1) WOW, this patch is awesome, I'm averaging close to 1 heroic essence every hour of rrt!

2) W. T. F. 12+ hours and nothing.

I polled several members of my clan, and it seems as though our heroic farmers fall into one of the two categories. Half of us are getting absolutely nothing while the other half are getting essence more frequently than anybody has ever seen.

Am I missing something here? It seems as though the patch was applied to some characters but not others. And this also seems to be independent of the area where fighting is going on. I know of one character in particular who averages 1 HE per rrt hour (3 per real time hour) in rapids, whitecap, and great plain.

It feels to me like there's a bug here.

Thank you for your consideration,
Jackhandey

They call it the random number generator for a reason.
Being over level 75 is meaningless, what matters is the level of the creature you are fighting.

I mis-spoke, all creatures were over level 75 as well. If it's a case of bad luck, I can accept that. I understand that the random number generator is used; I was wondering if there was an error in the way it was applied. I'm sorry for bringing it up.

I'm beginning to think this patch broke something.

Pre-patch: 1,182 heroic mode fights, 10 essences = 1 essence an average of 118 fights.

Post-patch: 431 heroic mode fights, 1 essence = 1 essence an average of 431 fights.

All fights as a level 85. Most in N. Lake; a few in Goblin Swamp or Deadman's Valley. None of them were in travel mode, and accelerator was active for all of them.

If plunderfiend affects essence drop rate at all, it is currently 93 (post-patch). It was in the high 80s during the pre-patch sample.

I understand random numbers and probability, but this seems like quite a significant difference.

Can you re-check your formulas Glitchless?

I agree with TJ's finds (and love the way he kept the data around).
The RNG could explain something for a few fights, but over 500 the numbers should average out.
You COULD have "bad luck" for over 400 fights, or "Good luck" for over 1K fights - or a combination of the two - but it seems rather unlikely.

I've ground about 18 straight hours of heroic mobs @ white/blue and gotten none at all. The RNG can always be blamed, but I'm thinking that either the drop-rate changed formulas entirely so that you have to fight heroic higher-level mobs to get chance (meaning white .05%, orange .25%, red .75%, purple 1%, black 2% or something) which would be a total make-over from trop-rate, or else something got hosed up in the re-coding.

was always like this, but as lower levels were able to fight harder for their level mobs easier and quicker, they got more.

Double checked and definitely working as intended. If you got 10 drops in 1183 fights you were very lucky. That being said, 1,000 fights may seem like a large sample but doing 1000 tests on something that has say 1/1000 chance of occuring is not statistically significant. It'd be akin to flipping a coin twice, getting two heads, flipping it twice again, getting two tails, and coming to the conclusion that something wasn't working right.

Okay, so my second hypothesis was right, he got lucky on his first draw, and unlucky on the second.

Thanks for checking.

Going to get this bracketed.

1,182 pre-patch heroic mode fights = 10 essences. Now up to 541 post-patch heroic mode fights = 2 essences. No change in conditions. I'll be in heroic mode for a while longer, so we'll see where this leads to.

if you notice tho tj that second essence came just as fast as pre-patch so mabe you just had an unlucky spell the first 430 mobs

In light of the above comment, this is now getting interesting.

I'm at 715 post-patch heroic fights (all in accel in N. Lake as a level 85). Now have six essences. That's an average of one essence every 119 fights - virtually the same as my pre-patch average of 118 fights.

Very, very interesting.

I'm @ 26 hours (all in accel) now in heroic, 18 in Rapids @ 82, then moved to 85 @ N lake. Nothing here yet.
